MOOD OF THE ROOM MATTERS

The size of the room will help you decide how to decorate an existing flooring treatment. In a large room, you will often use an area rug that floats in the middle of the room since this reduces the apparent size of the room. On the other hand, in a smallish room, you will often hope for wall-to-wall carpeting since this tends to make the room feel more spacious. (That’s one reason wall-to-wall carpeting is so popular in today’s apartments where rooms tend to be tiny.)
Large rooms can handle larger and more dramatic patterns than small rooms. This applies to flooring just as it does to all other aspects of your design. In a large room, you can use larger patterns on the floor—whether in a rug or tile or any other surface. In a small room, you are better off with either small patterns or solid colors.
